Described as a poet of light, Mario Nanni founded Viabizzuno in 1994 to fulfil his dream of premium-quality lighting designed and manufactured in Italy. Reproducing daylight, the Roy series — floor, desk, and wall lamps — puts lighting first and treats it as an essential element of the architecture.
The history of the series first began when architect David Chipperfield initiated the design for the Hotel Café Royal as a departure from the embellished architecture and lavish interiors. Rather, the composition of the lamp is engineered to respond with sleek, minimalist, simple, and reductive form. Clean lines complement while adding detail to intrigue, evocative of the designer’s relationship to nature in daily life.
We’ve used the floor and bedside wall lamps in our projects to add moments of quietness. The delicate design invites engagement — the piece's fragile functionality and textured surface to the dimming option and rotating the head with the touch of a finger — providing thoughtful interactions. Again, we return to the notion of simplicity of form, and through this, embracing the longevity and timelessness that serves our practice.
